Pulmonary and cardiac rehabilitation

If you have lung or heart problems, it’s a good idea to get plenty of exercise. Muscle cells “learn” to use oxygen more efficiently. This allows the body to do more even with less oxygen. As your fitness improves, your breathing difficulties and fatigue may decrease. By getting active regularly and staying active, you’ll feel much better.

What is pulmonary and cardiac rehabilitation?

Pulmonary and cardiac rehabilitation are programs designed to improve physical fitness, help patients cope with their condition, and teach healthy lifestyle habits, using a combination of exercise and education.

Cardiac rehabilitation is for people with heart conditions and focuses on recovery following, for example, a heart attack or heart surgery, while pulmonary rehabilitation is intended for people with chronic lung diseases such as COPD and focuses on reducing shortness of breath and improving endurance.

The cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation physical therapist will work with you to develop a personalized plan to improve your muscle strength and fitness, among other things. The physical therapist can also help you clear mucus from your lungs and reduce shortness of breath by teaching you breathing techniques.

A physical therapist specializing in pulmonary and cardiac rehabilitation has completed additional training in pulmonary and cardiac conditions, including knowledge of respiration and breathing techniques, to provide patients with comprehensive care in all areas.
