Mulligan Concept

The Mulligan Concept (Mobilisation with Movement) is a safe and effective method for mobilizing joints for all physiotherapists and manual therapists. A characteristic of the Mulligan Concept techniques is that they are 100% pain-free and are fast and effective in the short term.

Brian Mulligan, a physiotherapist and manual therapist in New Zealand, developed a new system for treating musculoskeletal complaints in the 1980s. The emergence of the Mulligan Concept seems a logical step in the development of musculoskeletal treatment. Over the past decades, there have been various trends in the world of physiotherapy and manual therapy. Some advocated primarily passive techniques, while others placed more responsibility on the patient and stimulated the rehabilitation process through a more active approach.

Mulligan was the first to systematically combine these two methods. By adopting a more “open-minded” approach to existing principles, he developed a new examination and treatment system for both the peripheral joints (hip, elbow, ankle, etc.) and the spine. Thus, the techniques used are a combination of passive correction and active (physiological) movement. With this technique, function is quickly and pain-free restored, if indicated.
