Hand therapy
The number of people with hand disorders is very large. A poorly functioning hand, both motorically and sensorially, often leads to total or partial disability. Even a relatively minor functional impairment can make certain actions almost impossible, which can have profound consequences for a person's life. The treatment of disorders of the hand, wrist, forearm, and/or elbow must be performed with the highest possible level of expertise. This requires special knowledge and skills from the treating Hand Therapist, whether as a follow-up after surgery or for complaints that do not require or cannot be surgically treated.
The following issues can be treated by a Hand Therapist:
- Orthopedic conditions of the hand;
- Peripheral neurological disorders of the hand;
- Rheumatic disorders of the hand;
- Wrist complaints;
- Bone fractures, tendon injuries, nerve damage, osteoarthritis, overuse injuries, amputation, and burns.
What is the difference between a general physiotherapist and a hand therapist?
After completing the physiotherapy training, the hand therapist has pursued an additional Master's program focusing on the examination and treatment of hand and wrist problems.
Treatment by a hand therapist may involve treating muscles, tendons, bones, joints, nerves, and the skin. Functional limitations can also be treated.
The Hand Therapist is also experienced in splinting and immobilizing movements for certain hand problems. In splint therapy, a custom-made splint is used to support the movement of a joint in the hand or wrist or to protect the damaged structure.
