Fit4Surgery

Since September 2023, Physiotherapy GC Haarlemmermeer has been collaborating with the Spaarne Gasthuis to provide medical care before and after bowel surgeries. These are typically operations with many complications and a lengthy recovery. The goal is to provide better support to patients surrounding these operations. This support is also beneficial for surgeries on other organs in the abdomen or torso. Healthcare professionals such as the dietitian, psychologist, and physiotherapist can be engaged for this purpose.

Fit4Surgery is a program for patients who are about to undergo surgery. The program aims to improve the patient's condition so that they recover better from the operation. 'The fitter going in, the fitter coming out'.

The program consists of physical training, improving nutrition, mental guidance, treating specific diseases or vulnerabilities, and quitting smoking and alcohol. Even in the short time that sometimes exists between diagnosis and surgery, physical condition can be significantly improved. This leads, among other things, to fewer complications, a shorter hospital stay, and faster recovery.

The Spaarne Gasthuis refers patients requiring this care to the physiotherapist. Within the Haarlemmermeer Health Centres Foundation, the oncology physiotherapist supervises this program. The physiotherapist examines the patient. The patient receives personalized advice, after which the program is started.

The program consists of training three times a week for a period of four weeks. The physiotherapist maintains direct contact with the specialist at Spaarne Gasthuis and ensures a digital handover to Spaarne Gasthuis within one week after the completion of the guidance.

Both physiotherapists are members of the Kennemerland Oncology Network and affiliated with the OncoCare Center Hoofddorp.
