The final phase of life and euthanasia

On October 9, GC Floriande organized a second information afternoon for patients of the health center, 'Do you know what you want?', regarding the end of life. During the afternoon, General Practitioner Matt Allison and Nurse Practitioner Marieke Nolens spoke about the importance of discussing your wishes with your loved ones and with your GP. They also discussed documenting your treatment wishes. Furthermore, they explained the difference between palliative sedation and euthanasia. Staff from Hospice Bardo and the district nursing service were present to talk about the care they can provide during the final phase of life.

In this newsletter, we would like to tell you a little more about the subject of euthanasia, as there were many questions about this during the information afternoon.

Euthanasia

In exceptional cases, doctors may assist a patient in dying through euthanasia or assisted suicide. This is permitted only when the patient requests it themselves and when the due care requirements laid down in the Euthanasia Act are fully met. These actions are tolerated by the government, provided that all legal conditions are met.

It is important to know that no one has a right to euthanasia. A doctor or general practitioner may always refuse a request, even when the patient has documented his or her wishes and even when the situation appears to meet all legal criteria. Doctors are not obliged to perform euthanasia.

Patients can ask their own doctor or general practitioner whether they perform euthanasia. If a doctor is unable or unwilling to carry out the request themselves, the patient can be referred to the Expertise Centre for Euthanasia. Please note that there is usually a waiting time of an average of three months there. At the Expertise Centre as well, a request must fully comply with all due care requirements set out in the law.
